Narrative

The Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (DCHC MPO) began developing a wildlife crossing plan for its planning area in early 2024 as part of its safety planning efforts.  With guidance from a Core Technical Team of MPO members and stakeholders, MPO staff have been leading this study to identify transportation improvements at wildlife crossing hotspots in the MPO's planning area to help eliminate fatalities and serious injuries associated with wildlife-vehicle crashes, while also helping to protect the natural environment and enhance wildlife connectivity.

The MPO Board released the draft wildlife crossings plan for a 21-day public comment on September 30.  MPO staff will present an overview of the public engagement activities, public comment received, and the updated plan for consideration.  Documentation for this item includes the MPO's presentation, wildlife crossings plan, public comment received, plan updates made, and letters of support from both the Southern Environmental Law Center and Friends of Bolin Creek.
